The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. (Matt. 8:8 KJV)
The Word of God is the basis, source and origin of Faith. Should anyone practice or profess Faith without the Word of God; such practice or profession of Faith is fake, false and void. We must gain understanding of this truth, lest one be spoiled by the whims of the wicked to spoil or deceive. Faith is one’s reliance on the Word of God to accomplish or realize what the Word says.
Notice, the demand or request of the centurion; “…but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.”, his hope and faith was upon the Word of God. He was so certain that the Word of God was the cure or need for his need, he hoped or planned to rely upon the Word. By Faith; He sought for the Word of God necessary for his need or situation. Beloved, there is a Word of the Lord for everyone’s need or situation. When one relies (depend or rely) on that Word of the Lord; miracle and salvation are the necessary result.
Concerning having Faith; the type demonstrated and exemplified by the centurion, commended and described as “great faith” by the Lord Jesus; the Bible says, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17 KJV); like the centurion, he came seeking the Word of God. That was his pursuit. His pursuit was to hear what Jesus would say; he was not so keen on Jesus’ coming to his house as he was on Jesus’ speaking the Word. His Faith was in the Word or better said; his Faith was derived from the Word of God, he trusted that good will result from the Word Jesus would say about the situation: that was his Faith. Truly so; “And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.” (Matt. 8:13 KJV).
There is a very important notice we all must gain from the Faith demonstrated and exemplified by the centurion. His Faith was both enduring and historic that Jesus commented to “them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel” (Matt. 8:10 KJV). It was a Faith type, Jesus had looked for but “have not found…, no, not in Israel”; his Faith revealed and proved the timing effect of the Word of God; “…his servant was healed in the selfsame hour “.
The Faith of the centurion proved or revealed that (his) miracle will be delayed or pending should Jesus followed him to his house before speaking a Word about his situation and he was not prepared to have the situation further delayed after all the necessary element is the Word and Jesus does not need to get to his house to speak the Word. This is profound!
Beloved, God can speak into our situation right now if we wait, thirst, pursue, hunger for His Word; “…but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.” (Matt. 8:8 KJV). We should never expect God to speak tomorrow or have certain factors be in place as something dramatic happening, the sky turning pink, etc., but as demonstrated by the centurion, the needed element for God’s work is the Word of God for “All things were made by him (The Word); and without him (The Word) was not anything made that was made.” (John 1:3 KJV). This is the manifest of Faith; locating the Word of God necessary for the situation and miracle one needs; “speak the Word only”. Praise the Lord.
