See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? (Heb. 12:25 NIV)
God speaks. This notice is important to God as it must be to us. God desires and demands that we (His people) know that He speaks and He requires our audience or attention. He’s so keen on the notice He urged His people, “if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth:” (Deut. 28:1 KJV), He rewards us for hearkening to his word
God is so strong on our being informed and conversant of the fact that He speaks; He strictly warned Israel never to represent or idolize Him by the cutting of wood or gold for a figure. God judges His being represented as idols very harshly. He asserts that such representations are invalid and null as they do not speak and could not be Him.
About idols the Bible says, “idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat.” (Psalm 115:4-7 KJV)
After God brought Israel out of Egypt, an adventure and experience that typifies the traverse of the Saints from the World to the Kingdom of God, from darkness to His (God’s) Light. The reinstatement of Man to sonship in God from slavery to sin and from the hardship of the devil (ruler of this World). In that bid, God commanded Moses, captain of God’s people saying, “Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee forever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the Lord.” (Exo. 19:9 KJV)
Notice why God would want the people to “hear when I speak with thee (Moses) “ that they might “believe” that God is real and Alive, and that He is the one with whom Moses related. This is a crucial notice to Humans. We should never take God for fiction or a figure. God wanted His people to know He is and speaks and should never admit the culture or idolatrous practice of Gentiles (those who do not know or misrepresented Him). Upon God speaking to Israel, He said to Moses, “Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.” (Exo. 20:22-23 NIV)
It is important to God that we know that He speaks and He wants to speak with us. To take God as mute, inapplicable or unsuited in our “conversations” or contemplations is to deem God as a statue or effigy that could not be involved or engaged in meaningful or intelligent conversation or transactions. Our God is Alive and acutely intelligent, the ONLY wise God, the Bible described Him (1Tim. 1:17 KJV)
It is upon this good knowledge that we must contact, connect and consult him, reference, respect and reiterate His Words and “See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks.” God has something to say about all that relates and pertains to us – we must search His Words, incline our ears, be motivated by His Words and thereby build our lives.
